Is IK Test For LED High Bay Lights Necessary?

LED High Bay Lights are specially designed for high ceilings and larger rooms, including warehouse, factory, gymnasium,etc. Due to the installation height is usually high, the maintenance for LED High Bay fixture is usually very difficult. That’s why Fireflier insists making high quality LED High Bay Lighting. Besides the LED(brand,efficiency,etc.), driver(brand,PF,dimming,etc.) and cooling fixture(die cast,cold forging,temperature,etc.), customer also cares about the IP level and IK level of the LED High Bay Fixtures. Usually the IP of the LED High Bay Lightings is IP65. So what about the IK? IK level is ignored by most clients usually. But when you use it for indoor sport(Gymnasium room), it is actually a very important factor that you should  care unless you can make sure the High Bay Lights won’t be hit by the basketballs.

So what is IK test? Let’s read the below article carefully:

IK Rating: Indicates the protection against mechanical impact.


IEC/TR 62696:2011(E) covers the testing and classification of luminaires according to IEC 62262.

The application of an IK rating to a luminaire is considered to be a performance issue and is not directly related to the safety provisions of IEC 60598 standards covering luminaire safety.

Application of the IK code as specified on the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Technical Report – Edition 1.0 2011-04.

Equivalent to impact of 0.25 kg mass dropped from 56 mm above impacted surface.

IK03 Protected against 0.35 joules impact.


Equivalent to impact of 0.25 kg mass dropped from 140 mm above impacted surface.

IK04 Protected against 0.5 joules impact.


Equivalent to impact of 0.25 kg mass dropped from 200 mm above impacted surface.

 IK05 Protected against 0.7 joules impact.


Equivalent to impact of 0.25 kg mass dropped from 280 mm above impacted surface.

IK06 Protected against 1 joules impact.


Equivalent to impact of 0.25 kg mass dropped from 400 mm above impacted surface.

IK07 Protected against 2 joules impact.


Equivalent to impact of 0.5 kg mass dropped from 400 mm above impacted surface.

IK08 Protected against 5 joules impact.


Equivalent to impact of 1.7 kg mass dropped from 300 mm above impacted surface.

To be honest, most of suppliers in China don’t have the IK test report for their LED High Bay Lights and some even don’t know it. And most LED High Bay suppliers make their LED High Bays with IK08.
